Meet the Partners #9 – Astilleros de Santander S.A.U., Spain

Retrofitting the existing fleet with suitable solutions is the key for a fast reduction of GHG emissions. Ship owners need to be guided on technical options and commercial implications (capital expenditure, impact on the payload of their ships). The return of the investment will be a key factor in the decision-making process. Fast decisions will result in fast implementation in the refitting yards and EU will be in a position to get the most benefits in this win-win process and be at the forefront of environmental stewardship, possibly attracting ships of non-EU flags to be refitted in EU shipyards thanks to the experience matured in green retrofitting.

In the case of Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) installation, we will focus on the retrofitting process required for an existing vessel. Taking advantage of the Astilleros de Santander S.A.U.‘s ship conversion experience and the WASP e-Sail rigid prototypes already installed by bound4blue, during this activity RETROFIT55 partners will study how to improve the installation route, identifying bottlenecks, inefficiencies risk and the critical activities.
